Introduction
DJI regularly releases firmware updates for the Mic Mini that fix bugs, improve connection stability, and occasionally add features. But the update process confuses people: there is no screen on the mic, no obvious “update” button, and the transmitter and receiver update separately. Done wrong, you end up with a transmitter on new firmware and a receiver on old firmware that refuse to talk to each other.
This guide walks through the full update on an iPhone using the DJI Mimo app, step by step. The whole thing takes a few minutes.
If you are new to the Mic Mini, start with my iPhone setup guide first – this guide assumes your mic is already paired.
Why update the firmware
- Bug fixes: early Mic Mini firmware had connection quirks that later updates resolved.
- Stability: updates improve wireless reliability and reduce dropouts.
- Compatibility: new DJI cameras and app versions sometimes require minimum firmware on the mic.
- Matching versions: the transmitter and receiver must run compatible firmware. If one updated and the other did not, re-linking fails – updating both fixes it.
Check for updates every couple of months, or whenever the mic starts behaving strangely for no apparent reason.
What you need
- DJI Mic Mini transmitter(s) and receiver
- iPhone with the DJI Mimo app installed (free on the App Store)
- The USB-C or Lightning adapter that connects the receiver to your iPhone
- Make sure the transmitter, receiver, and your phone are fully charged before you start.
- A stable internet connection on your iPhone (the firmware downloads through the app)

Step 1: Charge everything first
Take the transmitter(s) and receiver out of the charging case and confirm they power on. If anything is low, charge the case with all components inside until the case indicates full. Do not power anything off or close the app until the update finishes.
Step 2: Connect the receiver to your iPhone
- Slide the appropriate phone adapter (USB-C for iPhone 15 and newer, Lightning adapter for older iPhones) onto the receiver.
- Plug the receiver directly into your iPhone’s port. Avoid hubs and long extension cables for the update.
- Power on the transmitter(s) by removing them from the charging case. They should link to the receiver automatically – look for the solid connection light.
The Mimo app talks to the whole system through the receiver, so the receiver-to-iPhone connection is the critical link. If the app cannot see the mic, nothing else in this guide works – fix the connection first using my setup guide.
Step 3: Open the DJI Mimo app and connect
- Open the DJI Mimo app on your iPhone.
- The app should detect the connected Mic Mini receiver. If prompted, allow any accessory or Bluetooth permissions it asks for – it needs them to manage the mic.
- Navigate to the Mic Mini device page in the app. This is where settings like gain, noise cancellation, and the safety track live, and it is also where firmware updates appear.
Step 4: Check for firmware updates
- In the DJI Mimo app, connect your Mic Mini, open the device settings, tap About Devices, then tap the firmware version to download and install the update.
- If an update is available, the app will show the new version number and usually a short changelog.
- Confirm that your iPhone has a stable internet connection – the firmware file downloads through the app before installing.
Write down (or screenshot) your current firmware versions before updating. If anything behaves differently afterward, you will want to know what changed.
Step 5: Update the receiver first, then each transmitter
- Start the update from the app and keep the app open and in the foreground. On iPhone, updates only work over Bluetooth, not over a wired connection. Keep the Mimo app open and the phone awake until the update finishes.
- Update the receiver first. The app handles the components in order, but if you are given a choice, receiver before transmitters.
- Update each transmitter one at a time. If you have the two-transmitter kit, make sure both TX units get updated – it is easy to update one and forget the second.
- Each component will restart itself when its update completes. Wait for the status lights to return to their normal connected pattern before moving on.
The update takes a few minutes. Do all three components (both transmitters and the receiver) in one sitting.
Step 6: Confirm versions and re-link
- After all updates complete, check the firmware version in the Mimo app again and confirm every component shows the new version.
- Power everything off and back on (return the transmitters to the case, then remove them) to confirm they link automatically on the new firmware.
- Do a 10-second test recording and play it back. Re-link the transmitter and receiver after the update if they do not reconnect on their own.
Troubleshooting: when the update fails
- The app does not see the receiver: the receiver is not properly connected to the iPhone. Re-seat the adapter, try flipping the USB-C connector, and confirm the receiver is powered on. See the setup guide for the full connection checklist.
- Update stalls or fails partway: keep the app in the foreground, disable iPhone Low Power Mode, and make sure the mic components are well charged. If an update fails, run it again from the same screen in the Mimo app.
- Transmitter will not update but the receiver did: make sure the transmitter is powered on and linked to the receiver (solid connection light, not blinking). A transmitter that is not linked cannot receive the update package.
- Mic behaves strangely after updating: check whether settings were reset to defaults (gain, noise cancellation mode, mono/stereo). Reconfigure them in the Mimo app. If problems persist, re-link the transmitter and receiver from scratch.
- “Firmware mismatch” between TX and RX: this is exactly what Step 5 prevents. Update the lagging component to match, then power-cycle everything.
FAQ
How do I check my DJI Mic Mini firmware version?
DJI Mimo app > connect the Mic Mini > device settings > About Devices > tap the firmware version. Check all components – the receiver and each transmitter can run different versions.
Can I update DJI Mic Mini firmware without the Mimo app?
The DJI Mimo app is the only way to update Mic Mini firmware. There is no desktop updater. Install the free app, connect the receiver to your phone, and update through it.
How long does a DJI Mic Mini firmware update take?
A few minutes per component. Budget enough time to do the whole kit at once. Do not interrupt it.
Do I need to update the transmitter and receiver separately?
They update through the same process in the app, but each component installs its own firmware. With a two-transmitter kit, that is three separate installs (receiver + two transmitters). Confirm all three show the new version when done – a forgotten transmitter on old firmware causes linking problems.
My Mic Mini stopped connecting after a firmware update. What do I do?
First check for a version mismatch between transmitter and receiver and update the lagging one. Then power-cycle everything and re-link. If it still fails, re-pair from scratch following the iPhone setup guide.
The bottom line
Firmware updates are boring maintenance, and that is exactly why people skip them – until a dropout ruins a take that a six-month-old bug fix would have prevented. Ten minutes in the Mimo app every couple of months keeps the Mic Mini on its best behavior. Pair this habit with the right connection method from my setup guide, and the little 10-gram mic just works.
